Gruvön's head of development appointed adjunct professor of paper technology Lennart Stolpe, head of development at the Gruvön mill, has been appointed adjunct professor of paper technology at Karlstad University. He will spend part of his working time teaching and leading research at the university. "Close contacts between Billerud and the university are very valuable and we have high expectations for what deeper co-operation can bring," comments Bert Östlund, President and CEO of Billerud. Karlstad University offers around 50 programmes and 750 courses. Around 1,100 people are employed by the university. Research forms an important base for education at the university and the training of researchers is a core activity. The focus of the forest industry research programme at the university is on pulp, paper, surface treatment and printing. Energy technology, control and regulation technology and material technology are also included. Studies include how paper and packaging should be treated to make them as strong as possible. Research helps to create more durable packaging that has a good printing surface and can be recycled as well as developing new applications for paper-based packaging.
