Life cycle assessment and environmental product declarations

In order to produce a solid basis for our ongoing climate work, and to make it easy for our customers to assess the performance of our products from an environmental perspective, it is important to ensure comparability, and to make sure that the entire product’s life cycle is taken into consideration and analysed. That is why we at BillerudKorsnäs apply multiple standards and assessment instruments to examine our products.

Life cycle assessment
We commission IVL Swedish Environmental Research to perform life cycle assessments (LCA) of our packaging solutions. The studies compare paper packaging made of our material with corresponding solutions made of other materials. The studies consider the entire product life cycle: from material production to the disposal or recycling of the finished packaging.  In the most recent study, carrier bags made of our material is compared with bags made of recycled paper, recycled plastic and bioplastic. As can be seen in the graph below, a carrier bag made of BillerudKorsnäs’ paper is the best alternative from a climate perspective. Click the links below to read the life cycle assessments

Environmental Product Declarations
Environmental product declarations according to the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) standard make it possible to compare the performance of different products from an environmental perspective throughout their life cycles, and to calculate the environmental impact of the finished packaging products. The declarations present information such as emissions that affect the climate, acidification, the ozone layer and over-fertilization. Resource consumption is also stated. BillerudKorsnäs’ data are verified by an independent third party. See www.environdec.com/.
