Social development is fundamental to a sustainable future. This applies locally where our operations are found, but also globally where other major challenges exist. As the largest employer in several areas where we are active, we take responsibility and contribute to growth.
BillerudKorsnäs offers stimulating internships, summer jobs and trainee positions in several different areas. In 2015, a total of 260 young people were granted internships at one of our workplaces. The total time spent with us generated 1,333 weeks of experience, which is equivalent to about 33 school years. The company also provided summer jobs for 437 young people in 2015, in addition to the jobs available for contractors at the production units, which reached 311 full-time equivalent jobs.
The “Korta Vägen” (Shortcut) project was initiated at our production unit in Gruvön. This initiative aims to reduce the time it takes for people with a foreign background and qualifications from outside Sweden to start working. A six-month internship at BillerudKorsnäs is offered in conjunction with the programme, and the Labour Market Administration is responsible for most of the costs.
Future lab for students
In 2015, BillerudKorsnäs and the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm opened the exhibition Mega Mind. Its purpose was to inspire an interest in technology among young people. As well as technical challenges, there are three future labs and BillerudKorsnäs is in charge of one of them: the Packa Lab. In the lab, students get to solve tasks concerning the strength and origin of the packaging material and consider how the material can be used in new ways.
The partnership with Action Aid continued during the year, in which BillerudKorsnäs’ employees have the chance to donate an amount to Action Aid, which BillerudKorsnäs then tops up. A new partnership has also been established with the French non-profit organisation Tara Expeditions, which calls attention to a major problem concerning the world’s oceans: plastic rubbish.
