From a student to a Trainee at BillerudKorsnäs – Anna Sarbring
As a student I always wondered, what will my first job after graduation be like? Will my life change radically or will it still be learning mixed with festivities?
To work in a company is totally different in many ways. As a student you have a fixed schedule with several courses, at a company no day looks like another. The most distinct difference is that all actions actually give concrete and measureable effects, sometimes internal and sometimes for a supplier or customer. On the other hand, one similarity is that I learn new things every day – just as I did as a student. I mix work at my home department with travels to different sites within the trainee program. I get a great overview of BillerudKorsnäs and our products.
At my home department, my work is about achieving continuously improvements in a structured way. The methodology is called BKOM (BillerudKorsnäs Operational Management) and is included in BillerudKorsnäs’ work with Operational Excellence. A crucial task in my work is to support project teams that work with improvements all over the mill. The most beneficial outcome from this work is that I get to know a lot of people, who are working at totally different positions. That gives me an overall view of both the production and the company. Sometimes, it is like taking part of a second trainee program.
The surroundings around the Frövi mill are very beautiful and the mill has a long history. The picture shows an old school that is rebuilt to a conference center used for meetings.
As a recently graduated student, I thought about how I would be met and welcomed in a company. At BillerudKorsnäs and through their trainee program I have been given a warm welcome. I feel that I am given a great opportunity to grow and get a broad insight in the company. Another benefit is that the company really lets me think freely, to be innovative and pays attention to my view upon different parts. The home department is supportive and I see how the company works on daily basis. I get to know my local colleagues and I have the chance to start with both short and long term projects. If you are a student reading this, I would really recommend BillerudKorsnäs trainee program after graduation. I also want to encourage students (as well as others) not to get locked in a certain sector or industry and a specific position or location. Try new ways and do not be afraid to move for a new job and get the opportunity to both learn about something different and get to know a new part of Sweden or elsewhere in the world.
Lastly, back to my initial questions. I think the most exiting feeling with having my first job after graduation is that the results that I accomplish are visible for more than only me – i.e. opposite to my exam results. My life has not changed dramatically; it is still mixed with different challenges and celebrations, just in another shape.
