Third education module at Skogshem and Wijk – Eric, Maintenance Engineer

As a part of the trainee programme we have four training module sessions together with the Swedish Management Group. My name is Eric and I have the honour to write about the third one.

The third module was divided over two days where the themes were Cross Culture Management and finance. As usual, the first day started with presentations of the missions that we had worked with between the training sessions. The theme of the presentations was sustainability and Henrik Essén, Daniel Badman and Louise Wohrne from BillerudKorsnäs’s were in the audience.

After the presentations, Dr John Alexander from Australia arrived and talked, in a very funny and educational way, about communication and management between cultures. He did this with a starting point in the Swedish and Scandinavian management style and compared “us” with other cultures and nations. It was obvious that Dr John has a long experience as researcher, author and lecturer. His lecture was, in my opinion, one of the best so far during the training sessions.

The second day was about finance and financial understanding. Dr Mikael Runsten, one of Sweden’s most skilled lecturers within the area, visited us and explained what kind of information we can get from an annual report and how we can use it. Furthermore, we went through BillerudKorsnäs’s financial goals and looked into the income statement and balance sheet. Dr Mikael also taught us what we really mean when we talk about profitability.

If Dr John´s lecture was the best so far (after day one), Dr Mikael´s lecture was even better! I can highly recommend a lecture with him for an easy understanding of financial terms. Besides lectures, tips and presentations we also enjoyed good food and a bath in the heated outdoor pool at the hotel.

Next up is one week at Skärblacka mill. I´m already looking forward to meet all of the trainees again!
