Food safety – using primary fibres where purity is vital

Packaging should protect its contents. Not endanger it – and the end user. That is why the discussion of food safety is both relevant and important. And in the absence of applicable food packaging legislation, this is also why corrugated board made from primary fibres might be the best option.

EU legislation packaging material for food products states that material used for packaging food should not:

  • Endanger human health
  • Bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food
  • Bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics of food

In other words: packaging material for food products should not be unhealthy, change the food in an unacceptable way, or affect its taste and smell. But apart from this, there is no specific legislation for paper and cardboard which is intended to come into contact with food, unlike for example plastic, which is regulated. How does the food and packaging business handle this? By making it a national issue and looking at national legislation. At BillerudKorsnäs we follow German law and, in some cases, Chinese legislation when it comes to packaging for food stuffs and products that are exported outside the EU.

Materials and containers used in food packaging

But what has this to do with corrugated materials? You may have heard that you shouldn’t heat, for example, a pizza box made from recycled fibres in a microwave oven. That is because impurities could be freed in the process, contaminating the food. The paper industry has a long history of trying to create better, cleaner solutions for materials and containers used in food packaging – like paper without PCBs or Di-isopropyl naphalenes or other inks.

But the fact remains: If you want to be sure the paper used for packaging is as clean? as possible – you might do best to choose paper made from 100% pure, primary fibres, which has been manufactured in a responsible way.

This is because paper can be recycled up to seven times, getting weaker and potentially more contaminated each time. So, using primary fibres where they can do most good – helping secure food safety – might be the very best option.
