Who will be the international winner of PIDA 2022?

The theme of the 2022 PIDA brief was “It’s a Wild Life”, encouraging contestants to find inspiration from nature. In the semi-finals, the Gold Award winners from Sweden, the USA, the UK, Germany, and Belgium qualified for the Grand Finale in Monaco in October. Their creative designs lend features and functions from flowers and trees, volcanoes, and sea creatures.

The finalists of BillerudKorsnäs’ design competition – Packaging Impact Design Award – have been selected. After five exciting digital events in Sweden, the USA, the UK, Germany/Austria, and France/Belgium, five teams have received the competition’s finest prize: the PIDA Gold Award. Hence they automatically qualify for the Grand Finale, that takes place at the Luxe Pack trade show in Monaco in October. The finalists are:

Swedish winner inspired by carnivorous flower

Inspired by the Venus Flytrap plant, design students from Brobygrafiska claimed the Gold Award of PIDA Sweden. The team comprised Herman Rydholm, Sofi Hansson, and Julia Abrahamsson. Their inventive packaging solution for a set of drink mixer flavours called “Bite Botanical Bitters” impressed the jury with their deft use of “shape and colour that really catches our attention.” The jury’s notes also read: “This is something wild. It is playful and vibrant. We love how the source of inspiration has evolved to become this one-of-a-kind packaging.”

Volcano-inspired design wins PIDA USA

Emily Frieden from the Fashion Institute of Technology earned the Gold Award of PIDA USA. Her entry “Lavash” is a volcano-shaped package for a shower set. The design features all stages of volcanic activity – dormant, active, and extinct. The packaging design impressed the jury with its “attention to detail in every aspect of the brand, design, and execution. It is innovative, sustainable, user-friendly and beautifully designed and executed.

When I was researching different elements of nature I was really inspired by the juxtaposition of the restorative parts of volcanoes,” says Emily Frieden.

Versatile gum packaging wins PIDA UK

Josh Curtis from Ravensbourne University in London won the Gold Award at PIDA UK. His entry “Ritini” impressed the jury with its shape, branding, and versatility. “Ritini” is an eye-catching package, a branding tool and a clever dispenser all rolled into one. The word Ritini is Greek for resin and the tear-shaped package design is inspired by the drops of resin that are the key ingredient of the vegan chewing gum. The jury said: “The complete package, sustainable product well branded & unique cartonboard packaging shape and product dispenser, a fully deserved winner.”

Snap dragon wins double at PIDA Germany/Austria

The project “Snap Dragon” earned not only this year’s Gold Award but also the prize for best level of User Friendliness. The team behind the winning design project came from Hochschule der Medien in Stuttgart and was comprised of Lisa Frey, Annika Wahler, and Tabea Kasparian. “Snap Dragon” is an eye-catching package for a flowery facial serum, a skin care product. “The inspiration from the snap dragon flower transported into a packaging opening mechanism which works surprisingly in the same way, convinced the jury completely.

Sea-shell package design wins PIDA France/Belgium

Marjolein Delva from LUCA School of Art in Gent earned the PIDA Gold Award with her project “Nori Cosmetics”, which impressed the jury with its esthetics and originality.

A concept that was innovative, sustainable, user friendly, and beautifully designed and executed. We were impressed by the way the seashell was represented and the original way of hiding the product inside. Very aesthetic concept inspired by the sea. More of a display package but we really like the innovative concept. It really looks organic!

These five highly accomplished packaging designs will compete at the Grand Finale at Luxe Pack in Monaco, held from the 3rd to the 5th of October 2022. Don't miss the Grand Finale at 3 p.m. on Tuesday the 4th!
