Renewable packaging solutions

Paper is a truly amazing material. It can be recycled to make new paper or generate energy, it is compostable and biologically degradable. The forest that supplies it provides a net uptake of carbon dioxide. Paper-based packaging is gaining ground as a more eco-friendly option than packaging based on finite and fossil raw materials. 

BillerudKorsnäs is striving to reinforce this trend and to create a market that demands smarter, more sustainable packaging solutions. We work continuously to develop our products so as to accommodate and encourage this demand.

We at BillerudKorsnäs therefore aim to improve the quality and longevity of our packaging solutions on an ongoing basis, which explains why we are committed to active innovation and to developing our production sites in order to be able to produce more material that lasts longer and is kinder on the climate. One example is our New Billerud Flute®, material which is used as the middle layer in corrugated board. This material easily handles demanding periods of trans­port and challenging weather conditions. It also features unbeatable strength, so customers can create strong yet light corrugated board pack­aging, for example, with the potential to replace heavy wooden or plywood crates. This, in turn, helps reduce emissions in all links of the logistics chain.

Our materials and packaging solutions are used for food and drink, for luxury goods, for pharmaceuticals and hygiene products, and in industry. Packaging and materials that consumers come into contact with account for 75 per cent of the company’s net turnover. Our strong, clean material helps protect your foods and to maintain taste and nutrition – even during long, demanding periods of trans­port. Today, large food chains sell everything from sliced cheese and salami to smoked salmon in shaped pa­per trays made of the BillerudKorsnäs material FibreForm.

Our material also adds value and reinforces brands in the area of consumer- and luxury packaging, where qualities with superior print pro­perties are highly appreciated. In the industrial segment, our smart solutions help to opti­mise and streamline customer processes.

We at BillerudKorsnäs verify and improve the quality and safety of our products by regularly checking both processes and finished products, and by using accredited laboratories to perform analyses and document verifications. Our units have management systems in the fields of quality, the environment and energy as support in setting up systematic work methods that guarantee safety and durability.

By comparing our material with conventional options, we also increase both our own and our customers’ knowledge about renewable packaging material and the benefits that come with choosing material of this kind.

Life cycle assessment

To provide a solid basis for Billerud­Korsnäs’ continued climate work, and to allow customers to assess our products, we commissioned IVL Swedish Environmental Research to perform a life cycle assessment (LCA) of paper packaging solutions made using our material. The results will be published in 2016. The first study (in 2015) compared four paper packaging products – carrier bag, pasta bag, cement sack and bottle – made using our material with corresponding packaging made of plastic. The study examined the entire product life cycle: from material pro­duction to the disposal or recycling of the finished packaging. The findings clearly illustrate that paper pack­aging is a better option than plastic from an climate perspective. Emissions of green­house gases were 49–72% lower for pack­aging made of paper. For the other comparisons of nutrients, pollutants and ground-level ozone, paper produced much lower emissions in the vast majority of cases.
