COP 21

Tara Expeditions brought #OceanForClimate initiative to Paris

2015 was a busy year for Tara Expeditions. Tara's destinations included Greenland, London and Stockholm before she and her crew arrived at Paris, where the environment conference COP 21 took place from 30 November to 11 December. Delegates from 190 countries took part.

During COP 21 Tara Expeditions addressed the effects of climate change on the oceans and launched the Ocean Call for Climate campaign (#OceanForClimate) ahead of the meeting. The goal was to convince world leaders to bear the ocean environment in mind when they make decisions. Tara Expeditions took part in several seminars on climate and the oceans during COP 21.

Cop 21 and the climate agreements

At the UN summit on the environment and development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the so-called Rio Declaration, UNFCCC, was adopted. This is a framework containing actions to reduce the concentration of man-made greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. 195 countries are signatories to UNFCCC and each year there is a follow-up conference called COP – Conference of Parties – which monitors how the convention is being implemented. The first COP climate conference took place in Berlin in 1995, and many conferences since then have attracted special attention, including those in Kyoto, Montreal, Copenhagen and Durban.

COP 21 was one of the largest international conferences ever held in France. The event involved almost 50,000 participants, including 25,000 official delegates from governments, international organisations, UN departments, NGOs and civil society. Tara Expeditions took part in several seminars on climate and the oceans during COP 21.
